401: busy bliss

hey y'all.

wow, i haven't blogged since sep. 10 but it seems like months since i've been here.

we bliss have been busy.

school is back in session and that always brings change, change, change to the house of bliss.

the biggest change is going back to a semblance of bedtime.

in summer, baby bliss is allowed to stay up late. i'm a night owl by nature and i suspect she is too. except that most times i can stay up all night, get 2 or 3 hours of sleep, and hit the ground running at wake up time.

baby bliss is more like my momma. even when they go to bed at a "decent hour", they prefer to laze around in bed for as long as possible the next day.

i admit that i was a homebody for much of the summer but i'm not a bedhead. if i'm in bed past 9 a.m., it's cuz i was up past 6 a.m. from the night before.

so any way, baby bliss and i joined a home schoolers group and we've been hanging out with them and having a high ole time. we also joined girl scouts and expect more fun to come dashing around the corner any minute now. ;o)

mr. bliss has been working his narrow tail off. he's been doing a lot of overtime to make up for the time when there was no overtime.

i'm proud of him. a man should work his fingers to the bone to take care of his family. *wink*

my momma and stepdad came down for a long spell a few weeks back. they left yesterday and took baby bliss with them. my momma convinced baby bliss that grandma is a nicer teacher so i packed up that rascal and sent her on her merry way.

but i know she'll be back sooner than i can toss her room for all those broke-necked barbie dolls she's hiding and hoarding. so i'm enjoying my freedom as much as i can.

this morning i was up at 8 and out of the house early to run my friday errands. usually we're doing school work so we don't get out until late afternoon.

today i was out before noon and got a ton of stuff done in 2 hours' time. *cheeeeeeeeeeze*

now i'm at the library. i was relaxing until i got a phone call from mr. bliss.

he hath summoned me home for dinner and a movie.

i'm outta here.

have a good weekend folks.

400: bus stop babies

hey y'all.

school has just started and already there have been many reports on the news about incidents at the bus stops.

scariest so far: an adult -- who had no business on the bus -- stood at the bus stop with the children and the parents and hopped on the bus with a bunch of middle school students.

and no one said a word. i believe he rode all the way to school with them.

later, it was revealed to have been a prank by a local radio station personality.

supposedly, charges will be/have been pressed.

um, yeah.

and?

373: summer movies for the family

hey y'all.

it's that time again.

go check out the schedules for free and discount summer movies for families at raising 4 boys. they have links to nationwide movie theater chains that offer summer fun with a big break for the pocket book. hopefully there's one in a neighborhood near you.

they also have a ton of other informational and funny stuff for y'all to check out as well.

372: whew!

hey y'all.

a sista is dog tired.

it was a long day. i did about half the things on my to-do list and some things that weren't. like baby bliss's hair.

baby patel's mom comes late afternoon but before early evening so i need to be back from running any errands close to that time. i don't mind keeping her past the time her mom comes because she and baby bliss are usually having so much fun by then that they don't want to part.

today we made it home a few minutes after she got here. we met mrs. patel in the parking lot so she didn't have to scale the heights to retrieve her offspring.

baby bliss and i weren't so lucky. we climbed the slope cuz we had no choice. we reached the peak, sweaty and huffy-puffy.

inside we changed to dry (and cool) lounge wear. twenty minutes later, i was dripping sweat again as i tussled with baby bliss's wily tresses.

oh well. it had to be done.

but we only had two hours until we had to leave for our monthly stitch-in. i only managed to undo about 10 small braids and re-do them into 3 or 4 larger ones.

we showered, put on clean clothes (grrrr! more laundry), and hauled our patooties outta here for a few hours.

the stitch-in was fun. one of our friends didn't show and we missssssssssed her. but the group that showed up had lots of conversation, the stitches flew, and before we knew it, we were packing up to leave.

:-(

we stopped at trader joe's on the way home to pick up dinner. before we could even get half way home, baby bliss got a request for an evening play date from baby patel.

i let her go and she got back 20 minutes ago.

367: did i mention...

... i am now a child minder. at least for a little while.

out of all the doors in our apartment complex (at least several hundred), one of our neighbors knocked on ours to ask if her daughter could stay with us once school ends, while she and her husband work. she said, "of course we'll pay you".

when i say "neighbor" i'm using the term subjectively. the family lives in our complex (neighborhood) but not in our building. their building is down the parking lot and around the corner. about a three-minute walk. or we could cut across the playground and be there two minutes sooner.

the patels (not their real name) seem to be nice people.

they welcomed us nicely when baby bliss and i first moved here (back when i left mr. bliss).

a week or so after we moved in, we went to the pool one evening and there they were.

mr. patel was roasting corn on the grill while their daughter swam. she and baby bliss hit it off immediately and her parents were very friendly to me. mr. patel offered us corn when it was done.

at first i said no but they insisted.

to season the corn, they offered salt, limes, and a red spice from india. the salt and lime were yummy on the corn but i passed on the red spice. anything red means hot to me. now, i don't automatically poo-poo spicy but i draw the line at hot.

and why waste a good ear of corn by experimenting? lol

we ate and talked between bites. i asked them a gazillion and one questions about india and they fueled my imagination with tidbits of information that i'd never heard before.

so any way, we've seen and talked to the patels around the complex for almost two years now: at the pool, in the gym, on the playground, etc.

still, i was surprised when mrs. patel asked if their daughter could stay with us during the day.

i'm honored that they chose me to trust with their daughter and thankful for the unexpected income.

amen.

353: i fainted

hey y'all.

baby bliss and her cousin were having a "difference of opinion".

baby bliss wanted to clean her room (i should have had the smelling salts ready right then) but cousin said no, she wanted to dress the dolls.

being the loving tattle tale that she is, baby bliss came out to complain to moi.

i smoothed it over with a loudly voiced directive projected in the direction of baby bliss's inner sanctum: tell your cousin i said help you clean that room!

good enough cuz they got 'er done.

then baby bliss comes out into the living room once more. she stopped beside the couch and gave me a round-the-way-girl look and said: now i know how you feel when i act like that.

me (all innocent and stooopid): act like what?

baby bliss: a little hussy.

that's when i passed out y'all.

347: the smell of beauty

hey y'all.

saturday i was more than a little tired. allergies have kicked baby bliss and i around this season and i've been coughing a lot. that in addition to my itching ears and sore throat. i used to have bad allergies before baby bliss was born (ears/nose/throat itching, nose and eyes running all over the place).

the worst of it was the 2 or 3 day i had a cutting feeling in one side of my throat. even with that it's been manageable for me because i've had practice.

but poor Baby Bliss hasn't experienced anything like this. and now, on top of the problems she's been having, she has pink eye.

on the way home from church last sunday, baby bliss said, "mommy, ____ said she thinks she has pink eye but she wasn't sure because she has allergies too."

the child in mention has had allergies since we've known her. but i'd never seen her eyes red, as i noticed they were on sunday.

what i'm wondering is why the child thought she had pink eye. did she hear her momma say those words? and if not, did she say those words to her momma? before they left for church? i'm really wondering.

cuz now that i know baby bliss has it, we're staying home. no way would i send her to junior church knowing she has a highly contagious infection. i think it's distasteful, to say the least.

most of my day (after i was awakened from a much-needed slumber) was spent sanitizing the place. which was a bit of a bummer cuz i was planning to sort out my office and tackle some other things from friday's to-do list.

when it got full dark, the 3 of us took a walk to the mailbox. as we turned onto the main road, the smell of honeysuckle wafted up the hill.

it brought back memories of home, where for as long as i could remember, there was a honeysuckle spread growing along the fence of the house across the alley from my grandma.

there was also a wild spray of honeysuckle growing along one of the fences in the side yard of the house we sold before we relocated.

i've smelled it here before but it was so unexpected and such a nice surprise at the end of a day that had worn me out.

thanks God.

287: another blogging bliss ?

baby bliss got a laptop for christmas.

i'm hoping she'll pitch a tent in the blogisphere with us y'all.

(but am i really ready to see myself ranted about in cyberspace?)
.

286: more mind control?

courtesy of our Fed'ral gov'ment, we will very soon be forced to spend our hard earned monies to acquire televisions that will broadcast digital signals. cuz if'n we don't, we'll no longer be able to watch free telly.

because they love us so, our Congress set aside $1.5 billion to ensure that we all retain our right to free t.v.

$5 million was set aside for education.

gee.

how much is that per state? how much per student in the U.S.?

i'm disgusted that gov'ment officials think telly is much more important than our children's education. which is also supposed to be free. hello? how many children will be left behind cuz they're watching telly on sets that get digitally enhanced broadcasts while their favorite teachers are being pink-slipped cuz the school districts around the country have to split $5 million in educational funding?

and some people say they don't believe in conspiracy theories.

257: we're making snowflakes

did y'all see my post last year about the snowflakes?

you can make them at this website Popular Front.

last year each snowflake donated to charity. this year i'm not sure cuz i didn't see anything relating to it.

but it's fun y'all. take the chaps (that's "children" for those of y'all who don't speak southern) and let them make snowflakes. it will keep them outta your hair for a few hours. guaranteed.

but i warn y'all: it's addictive. if you only have one computer in the house and you'll need your's that day, you've gotta have something really spectacular planned to get it back.

251: children, church, commerce, and crafts

can y'all tell from the title that our church is having a holiday craft bazaar?

they're calling for vendors and i'm thinking 'bout selling some stuff.

i have a things i made that are just sitting round here wondering why.

i already have:
  • 3 (crocheted) dog leashes (that were incomplete; i finished 2 last night)
  • 1 ring
  • 1 bracelet
  • 1 crocheted scarf
  • 3 baskets
  • several pair of earrings (but some need a little work)

i plan to make more rings cuz they're the fastest to make. the only thing is coming up with design ideas...

i might make a few baskets but i'm not really committed to the idea. i did find some really groovy yarn at the dollar store tho. it would make pretty barrette or pencil holders for the kids.

did i mention that the kids will be making ornaments to sell so they can raise money for the youth fund?

i'm not sure if all vendors are sposed to donate any of their proceeds to the church or the kids but i plan to.

the bazaar is Dec. 1 but we have to take the stuff to the church by Nov. 30.

that gives me 30 days right?

246: g'morning

hey y'all.

just peeking in to see what's shaking and stirring...

i'm 'sposed to be in the shower cuz we gotta take these chaps (my nieces and nephew) back to their momma.

how was everyone's weekend?

mine was stoooopid busy.

working for Client A of course. but it's been good. no complaints except that i didn't have a lot of time to show my kin the sights of our big city. (they live in a reallllllly small town.)

it looks like the Main Project is drawing to a heart-pounding close. i'm thankful.

we're gonna miss church (2nd sunday in a row) but i know God understands. :o)

what are y'all doing today?

soon's i'm outta the shower, we're hitting the road.

ciao for now.

235: give 1, get 1

have y'all heard about the $100 laptop project, designed to provide children in "developing" nations with laptops? if you haven't, you can read about it when you follow the link.

if you have, there's new information about the project and i'm giving it two thumbs up.

starting november 12, you can "give 1, get 1" for $399. in other words, if you buy a $200 laptop to be sent to a child in a developing nation, you can get one for your own child for an additional $200.

go here for the full details: Give1 Get 1.

217: sunday stuff

oh happy day!

we were late for church sunday cuz we overslept by 28 minutes and we dragged our tails getting outta here. on a nicer note, i discovered a better route to church. it's not faster but i like it better cuz the first leg is highway driving. when our road winds back into the city, the scenery is fresh and new cuz it's not our usual route. that makes it a nicer drive for me. '-)

boy howdy was church good! our friend S___ went to another of our churches so i sat near folks who i didn't know until the end, when we hugged and cried on each other. baby bliss goes to the kid's section now without my prompting. i'm happy for her cuz for awhile she was too shy.

one time she went and came back crying 10 minutes later, saying she didn't know what they expected her to do.

after church, we stopped briefly at the library to return a movie. our next stop was bloom to get chips and soda for the cookout at our ministers' house. we took the few hours between church and party to rest and i should have taken a nap but didn't.

i also should have taken my contacts out and rinsed them but i didn't. :-(  (i probably should be doing it right now but i'm not.)

the cookout was fun and yummy. our ministers, C___ and R___ provided the dogs and burgers. we all brought the rest.  :0) everyone laughed, talked, ate, and drank to almost-bursting. the chaps ran around the yards (front, back, side), played b-ball, volley ball, flew a mylar frisbee, and probably enjoyed themselves more than the adults.

there was also a live concert with our musical director for the month. he's a very talented dude who has performed at venues around the country and with some well-known artists. he and our ministers are good friends. i missed the music cuz i stayed outside with some of the chaps (baby bliss included) and started a new basket. we got home round about 9 p.m.

it's movie night.

211: mazel tov!

congrats to my blog sista Aly Cat 121 and her hubby on the birth of their beautiful daughter Asaria. this is daughter number 4 for those love bunnies.

y'all have got to check out the pics of those lil angels as babies. what's funny is that it looks like there are four pics of the same baby but it's not true. all the girls just look so much alike. "-)

195: i feel silly, oh so silly...

but happy too y'all.

check this out...

how stupid am i? me--the internet queen, lady laptop, online fanatic...

why in the world did i not think to look up my sister's info online?

actually, i did it when we first lost touch and couldn't find anything but the old info.

but good ole sis. her new number is listed (along with her two old numbers) and i was able to reach her yesterday.

she's doing okay. i'm a little concerned about some things she said but i know she's doing the best she can. (aren't we all?)

i'm happy to say that we're all are driving down this weekend to see her. baby bliss will meet her cousins; i'll meet my nephew; mr. bliss will meet his sister-in-law, 2 nieces, and 1 nephew; we'll all meet my sister's significant other.

thank you God/Goddess/Universe for the nudge and for being persistent with it. i know i miss it sometimes Divine One, but this time i got it in a timely manner. '-)

of course i can't go without bearing gifts. as i was looking through my stashes of goodies for things i know my sister would love, i came across something i've been actively looking for--and agonizing over--for a few weeks. the information--if accessed by the wrong person(s) would allow someone to literally steal my life savings. i had no idea where it was and believe you-me when i say i tore this place up looking for it.

somehow it managed to hide right where i'd looked a hundred times before. :-&

i also came across some other things i hadn't seen in a while, wanted and missed, but was too tired to look for them.

there are so many reasons linked to the word "why"...

i'm thankful for them all.

amen.

194: the library police

yesterday y'all, i learned that we have library police.

reminded me of that stephen king story but i was still happy to see him here. '-)

did i tell y'all about the gang banger incident here at the library a few months ago?

it wasn't a shoot out or anything serious like that. but it was unsettling just the same.

baby bliss was looking for videos in the kid's section and i was checking out the CDs over on the other aisle.

she came and said, "mommy. there are some guys sitting in the children's section and something ain't right about them."

i asked her what she meant and she said she didn't know, just something. baby bliss ain't scared of much so i sashayed on over to see what she was talking about.

sure nuff, something was strange about those guys. i played it cool and strolled over to the videos with baby bliss. we acted like we were looking for movies but i was actually checking the guys out.

the first thing i noticed was the looks on their faces. they all looked spacey. not in a drugged way, just in a dog-tired kinda way, or like they were in stand-down mode and waiting for orders. weird...

second, i noticed their clothes. the clothing was typical urban teenager/young people type of gear: baggy pants, over-sized tees, and thick-soled footwear. the clothes looked obsessively clean and pressed, maybe brand spanking new.

what made them stand out was the red bandanas. one guy had one hanging from his lower pants pocket. another had his hanging from his back pocket. the third guy had his tied around his neck. they also stank. like they'd been sleeping in abandoned houses or dirty places.

just so happened that they left when we did. i told baby bliss to hang back, so they could go out before us. they got into two black SUVs with california tags.

scary.

193: say WHAT?!

if i wasn't the type of momma that i am, i'd be waiting for this boy with a baseball bat y'all.

the other day we were at the library. baby bliss was hanging out at a table in the kid's section, with a girl she met here monday.

i was standing at my friend V's desk, shooting the breeze. out of the cornea (LOL) of my eye, i saw a young man plop himself in a chair at their table. i didn't think much of it but i did keep one eye on them while i continued gabbing.

next thang i know, baby bliss and her friend come running over to me and V, giggling like mad hyenas. baby bliss had a piece of folded paper in her hand.

"mommy!" she giggle-shouted, "look at this!"

i took the paper, unfurled the gazillion folds, and here's what i read:

HAY my is ____ when i fast saw you

I have a crush on you do you a boyfriend

I love you will you go out with me

I like your sister the one in the pink

I love you babygirl call me at _____________

I love you I will miss you babgirl

(first name last name)

I love you

baby girl

my first observation was that mr. ________ either flunked elementary english or he was so smitten with baby bliss that he just couldn't get his thoughts together. i had to give him points for style and suave maneuvering tho. the note was typed, not handwritten and he delivered it himself. but he got demerits for failing to ensure that the note was delivered to the correct recipient.

baby bliss said he sat at the table, struck up a conversation with her and her friend (the one wearing pink), asking about school and how old they were. then instead of giving baby bliss the note directly, he put it on the table, looked up at the ceiling and said, "that's for you".

the friend grabbed the note, they read it, then got confused as to who it was really for. hence bringing the note to momma for further clarification.

after i read the note to V, the friend asked me to give it back to her. i told her no, i was holding it for evidence, just in case.

i'll admit i was a little miffed when baby bliss said the boy told them he was 15. then i had to remember that young ladies usually mature sooner than young men (mentally, at least) and how older guys were always interested in me when i was young. (but not 10!)

i later learned the young man in question was part of a group of mentally challenged young men who are brought to the library periodically by an adult who may be their case worker.

i showed mr. bliss the note when we got home and gave him all the particulars i knew. initially he was up in arms about it all.

but he checked the young man out when he stopped by yesterday and thought the guy was harmless. he said, "he would probably be a better friend to her than some of the friends she has now".

mr. bliss is just too trusting at times.

.

192: observations

i'm sitting at the library in the kids section, looking out the window at parking lot activities.

i've noticed (and not only today) that a lot of people tend to let their small children walk behind them. i've seen both men and women do it, tho mostly women. (but i'm sure that's cuz there seem to be more women than men bringing the kids to the library.)

even tho she's 10, i'm careful to have baby bliss walk beside me or in front of me. i feel it's safer in case we need to run or something. that way i don't have to look behind me to see where she is or if she's paying attention. i can just snatch her up and explain the particulars as we haul tail outta the sich'ation.

* * *

yesterday i noticed a high percentage of men in the library. some of them were kinda creepy too. i think one was clocking mr. bliss. (to 'clock' means to watch someone's activity very closely, sometimes for purposes of getting to know them in the romantic sense; sometimes to vic them. 'vic' is short for 'victim' and when used as a verb, in the lingo of the ghetto, it means to make someone the victim of a crime.)

mr. bliss dropped by for a surprise visit. i let him use my laptop while i got up to check on baby bliss in the computer room and tend to a few assorted library activities. when i came back, i came the long way, which brought me around from behind mr. bliss.

lo and behold, i saw a man who appeared to be watching over my husband's shoulder. our respective tables were located on opposite sides of a vee that's formed where two window walls meet, kinda like this: ;V; (the 'V' is the wall and the dots are the tables; the commas represent air, really but i needed to use the semicolon to better show where the tables are.)

if the guy had been sitting at the table correctly, he would have been facing two other tables, a small lounge area, and another window wall. but he wasn't. he had pulled the chair back from the table, so it was closer to the edge of the V. then he sat so he could see our table (and anything beyond it as well.)

when i noticed him, he was leaning forward, perched on the edge of the chair as if he was trying to see what my husband was doing on the laptop.

when i returned to my seat, i leaned in as if i was going to nuzzle my husband's neck and i whispered "somebody's watching you". mr. bliss turned around to check the guy out. a few minutes later, he turned around to look at the guy again. eventually the guy turned his chair to face his own table.

wow.

.

903.

Happy Friday everyone. I hope you are all healthy and safe. As I said in my previous post, there have been a number of changes chez Bliss. ...
