378: say WHAT?!

hey y'all.

i saw a headline today that pissed me off and makes me wonder when greed and stupidity became the requisite qualifications for some very specific high falutin' jobs:

ExxonMobil dodges $2 billion payout

why is it not enough for the greedy highway robbers that we, the general public, are selling blood and body parts to fill up our gas tanks?

why is it not enough that they have taken us hard-working citizens for so many of our hard-earned dollars that they are now "getting out of the retail gas business"?

now the supreme court has ruled to decimate the punitive damages the thieves were ordered to pay for causing the worst environmental disaster of our time.

i can't help but wonder if some of our justices smoke PCP on their lunch break...

i also wonder how much longer we americans are gonna put up with this nonsense.

personally, i think we should go back to the horse and buggy while we wait for solar-powered cars.

today is hump day in more ways than one.

baby bliss and i are scheduled to leave tomorrow to head to my hometown for a family reunion.

376:

hey y'all.

i need to get to bed cuz it's 4 a.m. and i know it will be another busy day in the land of bliss.

yesterday was unexpectedly busy. i knew i had some things to do but it just got out of hand once i walked out the door.

it started with a call from grandma. she wanted to come over to help baby bliss clean her room. baby bliss said yes because she hates cleaning her room more than getting her hair combed. and she wanted to swim but knew she couldn't go unless her room was neat and tidy.

i'll take the blame for everything that followed.

we got grandma from her house and i dropped them both here around 3. grandma said she had a pressing engagement around 5:30 so needed to gone and back by 5:15, latest.

my first stop was the library to return 20 pounds of borrowed materials. (i'm not joking.) a few items i'd reserved online were waiting for me so i got those. then i popped over to walmart (a 3-5 minute drive) for water and fertilizer spikes for my peace lilies.

my walmart allergy didn't kick in at all (thanks for the joke nurse so-and-so!) and i was in there longer than i wanted. i picked up an extra pair of shorts for me and one for baby bliss, 4-5-6 gallons of water, and two boxes of capri sun for baby bliss and i.

the bank (my next stop) is another 3-5 minutes up the road. i parked and sashayed across the parking lot and before i could reach the sidewalk, my phone rang. it was baby bliss calling to tattle on grandma: grandma was washing our dishes; grandma was doing our laundry; grandma was putting stuff away in the wrong place(s).

yeah, i knew it was coming. it happens every time grandma comes over to help. she knows no limits on what she's here to do.

not that i don't appreciate her help because i absolutely do. it's just that we have to do additional work after she leaves, to put things in the places we're used to seeing them and/or finding things that we missed and having to find them days and weeks later.

everyone in the bank probably heard me yelling at baby bliss (who had put the phone down) to give grandma the phone. i could hear them in the background, baby bliss talking to grandma like grandma was a 2 year old, trying to get her to sit down and watch t.v.

grandma wasn't having any of it. she fussed and fussed and would not come to the phone. i knew i needed to get home before grandma put baby bliss in the oven.

but i wasn't done running my errands. so i went to the post office to mail my sister's birthday gift (we share the same birthday) and check my p.o. box.

on the way home i passed my cousin who was headed to her house. we waved and i turned around and went back to her house, where we gossiped and talked to neighbors for about 30 minutes.

it turned out that grandma's pressing date was cancelled and she stayed here with us for another few hours.

baby bliss talked grandma into taking her to the pool and i had some peace and quiet while my arms regained their blood flow (after i carried several gallons of water up umpteen steps).

i was doing good until #2 auntie called to ask what i was gonna fix grandma for dinner.

say what?

good that she called tho because grandma had been here all day without eating. (she does that all the time. she eats well but not a lot. i have never seen her eat more than one plate of food ever in my life.)

now y'all know y'all have never seen a blog post about me cooking. but while #2 auntie was on the phone, i checked the freezer. thank God mr. bliss buys so much food. we had chicken breasts, corn on the cob, and green beans in the freezer.

i put the chicken in a bowl of water to thaw out, tossed the corn and green beans in the steamer, and heated up the counter grill. i thought i could just grease the grill with olive oil and things would progress naturally.

ha!

i didn't have enough oil and what little bit i did have rolled into the gutter because unbeknownst to me, our building and/or kitchen counters are not level. i put the chicken on the grill any way and it stuck to the grill in an unappetizing manner.

impromptu thinker that i am, i grabbed the butter and began greasing the griddle. it worked well enough and by the time i was done cooking the chicken, all the evidence was gone so i didn't tell anyone.

when i went out on the balcony to flag down baby bliss and grandma at the pool, i saw mr. bliss rounding the corner into the parking lot. there was enough for us all and i knew he would be totally surprised that his wife cooked a real meal.

the pool people couldn't hear me so i went down to retrieve them. baby bliss the water nymph was pissed. she didn't want to leave her wet habitat and refused to eat after her shower and shampoo.

grandma and mr. bliss munched happily on their vittles. i was too busy to get a real plate so i chomped on a chicken sandwich while cleaning and trying to coerce baby bliss into eating. then i remembered that the food i fixed wasn't exactly to her liking: she's not a big meat eater, green beans usually upset her stomach (for years and years), and eating corn usually makes her itchy around bed time.

she decided to make bean burritos for herself.

grandma and i snuck off to baby bliss's room for additional cleaning. we bagged all her winter clothes and extra blankets to be moved to storage later. i also pruned her clothes, toys, and jewelry stashes and filled a small bag for goodwill. i added it to the big bag of stuff we should be taking up there towards the end of the week.

by the time we took grandma back home, it was after 9 p.m. baby bliss teased her about it because grandma does not play being out in the street at night unless it's church-related.

i think we're leaving thursday (baby bliss and i) and neither of us is packed. i did find time to pull out 20 outfits though. now i need to weed through to see what i'm really taking to wear. i want to take the small suitcase and one other medium-sized bag.

375: "...follow up with your personal physician..."

hey y'all.

i didn't need to. thank you God.

but maybe i should have. that tetanus shot did a weird-y on me and i got my days and nights all mixed up.

the incident actually happened late night on june 18. by the time we left the hospital, it was early morning, june 19.

by june 20th, i was in the midst of some sort of delusional scenario that i know was brought on by that tetanus shot.

nausea and a bad headache kept me awake for a lot of the hours between then and saturday evening. when i did sleep, it was restless and full of strange dreams that seemed more like day dreams.

*** DO NOT READ PAST THIS POINT IF YOU'RE EATING OR JUST HATE GROSS-OUT KINDA STUFF ***

i also spent quite a bit of bit of time in the bathroom, flipping a coin for toilet or trash can. (the toilet won.)

we are our own primary care physicians in most instances, especially those of us who don't have health insurance. we do (have health insurance) but in a family of 3, the co-pays can add up to a mortgage payment before you know it.

my follow-up care consisted of mega doses of vitamin C, spirulina, lots of water, very little food (the nausea, the nausea...), and lots of sleep.

my hand feels fine as long as i don't press my palm within a few inches of the teeny weeny incision. i was already having some problems with my right hand any way which i suspect is related to nerve damage.

it's been several months since i've been able to use my index finger to twist caps off water or juice bottles. there's just no strength there and the finger hurts sometimes too.

any way, i am thanking God for the lesson (which i'm still waiting to understand) and the subsequent healing. even though i don't know why, we were supposed to be in the E.R. that night.

grandma said it's good that it happened last week and not this one (because i have to drive this week, a topic for another post).

you're absolutely right grandma.

374: life in the E.R.

hey y'all.

i dunno why i can't seem to avoid popping into the emergency room every six months or so.

my most recent visit was the wee hours of this very morning.

in a freaky accident brought about by the search for my cell phone, i stabbed myself in the hand with one of the tiny steel crochet hooks i use to crochet jewelry (and other stuff).

baby bliss began to cry and immediately jumped up to tell mr. bliss. (who had just gone to bed because he's on night shift this week.)

i poured on some eucalyptus oil (so i wouldn't get infected) and tried to pull the hook out. it was stuck on something (a vein? an artery?) and hurt like hell so i stopped pulling.

it had also begun to hurt and i realized it hadn't hurt going in. i heard it more so than felt it. weird huh?

baby bliss cried the whole 10-minute drive to the hospital.

i guess i was the first crochet hook impalee that the pair in admittance had ever seen. they made faces and oohed and aaahed at my predicament. one of them got me a wheelchair and i thought he was overdoing it a bit.

when i began to feel sick to my stomach from the waves of pain that came and went, i looked over at him and there was a halo around his head.

we didn't have to wait long before i was seen. i was in the back in less than 10 minutes and i'd say the whole thing -- from numbing to hook removal to tetanus shot -- took about an hour. thank God the hook didn't go all the way through my hand.

we went to mc donald's after. (it was the only thing open at 2 a.m.)

what a way to ring in my birthday.

373: summer movies for the family

hey y'all.

it's that time again.

go check out the schedules for free and discount summer movies for families at raising 4 boys. they have links to nationwide movie theater chains that offer summer fun with a big break for the pocket book. hopefully there's one in a neighborhood near you.

they also have a ton of other informational and funny stuff for y'all to check out as well.

372: whew!

hey y'all.

a sista is dog tired.

it was a long day. i did about half the things on my to-do list and some things that weren't. like baby bliss's hair.

baby patel's mom comes late afternoon but before early evening so i need to be back from running any errands close to that time. i don't mind keeping her past the time her mom comes because she and baby bliss are usually having so much fun by then that they don't want to part.

today we made it home a few minutes after she got here. we met mrs. patel in the parking lot so she didn't have to scale the heights to retrieve her offspring.

baby bliss and i weren't so lucky. we climbed the slope cuz we had no choice. we reached the peak, sweaty and huffy-puffy.

inside we changed to dry (and cool) lounge wear. twenty minutes later, i was dripping sweat again as i tussled with baby bliss's wily tresses.

oh well. it had to be done.

but we only had two hours until we had to leave for our monthly stitch-in. i only managed to undo about 10 small braids and re-do them into 3 or 4 larger ones.

we showered, put on clean clothes (grrrr! more laundry), and hauled our patooties outta here for a few hours.

the stitch-in was fun. one of our friends didn't show and we missssssssssed her. but the group that showed up had lots of conversation, the stitches flew, and before we knew it, we were packing up to leave.

:-(

we stopped at trader joe's on the way home to pick up dinner. before we could even get half way home, baby bliss got a request for an evening play date from baby patel.

i let her go and she got back 20 minutes ago.

.

371: i'm already late!

today's list:

  1. baby patel here

    367: did i mention...

... i am now a child minder. at least for a little while.

out of all the doors in our apartment complex (at least several hundred), one of our neighbors knocked on ours to ask if her daughter could stay with us once school ends, while she and her husband work. she said, "of course we'll pay you".

when i say "neighbor" i'm using the term subjectively. the family lives in our complex (neighborhood) but not in our building. their building is down the parking lot and around the corner. about a three-minute walk. or we could cut across the playground and be there two minutes sooner.

the patels (not their real name) seem to be nice people.

they welcomed us nicely when baby bliss and i first moved here (back when i left mr. bliss).

a week or so after we moved in, we went to the pool one evening and there they were.

mr. patel was roasting corn on the grill while their daughter swam. she and baby bliss hit it off immediately and her parents were very friendly to me. mr. patel offered us corn when it was done.

at first i said no but they insisted.

to season the corn, they offered salt, limes, and a red spice from india. the salt and lime were yummy on the corn but i passed on the red spice. anything red means hot to me. now, i don't automatically poo-poo spicy but i draw the line at hot.

and why waste a good ear of corn by experimenting? lol

we ate and talked between bites. i asked them a gazillion and one questions about india and they fueled my imagination with tidbits of information that i'd never heard before.

so any way, we've seen and talked to the patels around the complex for almost two years now: at the pool, in the gym, on the playground, etc.

still, i was surprised when mrs. patel asked if their daughter could stay with us during the day.

i'm honored that they chose me to trust with their daughter and thankful for the unexpected income.

    amen.

    .

366: thank You for this day!

    hey y'all.

it is such a beautiful day today and i'm thankful. the sun is shining and it's supposed to get up to 93 today. but right now there is a cool wind whistling through the branches and it's singing my kind of tune.

i turned the thermostat up to it's highest setting and opened the patio door. the ceiling fan is on and the most delicious breeze is tickling my toes.

this is perfect sleeping weather and i'll be taking a short nap, shortly. :-) i was up until the wee hours watching "Snapped" on the Oxygen Network. i've heard my mother talk about the show and i've been wanting to see it for a while now.

what prompted me to check it out was my momma telling me about Deion Sanders and his wife Pilar's reality t.v. show, also on the Oxygen Network. after i watched a few episodes of their show, i noticed that "Snapped" was also on the lineup. I guess I watched 30 or 50 episodes, including some of the detailed interviews after the segments.

it was fascinating and my detective-like mind poked holes in several of the cases. of course i was only getting the nine minute version so i'm sure a lot of pertinent facts were left out. but still, thank God i wasn't on any of the juries because the words "reasonable doubt" floated through my mind at random moments.

hmmm... i haven't been on a jury in a long time. back home, i got called up for jury duty every two years, no matter what. in fact, i got a summons forwarded to me in the mail shortly after we moved here. haven't seen one since.

    365: speaking of sweating...

...baby bliss, mr. bliss and i went to the gym last night.

it's free and right here in the complex so we have no excuse for not going. however, last night was the first time we had been in several months.

baby bliss loves the elliptical machine and the treadmill. mr. bliss does all the weight lifting stuff including free weights.

although i should probably be exercising a lot more body parts, i just ride the stationary bike because i'm trying to firm up my jiggly wiggly thighs.

i'm also trying to eat better-for-me foods but it's hard to do that around here. mr. bliss is a board certified junk food aficianado. he is right this minute plotting with baby bliss to get me to agree to go to dinner at olive garden.

olive garden is not my favorite dinner experience of choice. for one, although i love pasta, i can no longer eat alfredo sauce as it both constipates me (it's dairy) and it gives me a massive headache (the other components, possibly nitrates).

coupled with my love of seafood, my fried food weakness drives me to want dinner at a little seafood place we all enjoy. but mr. bliss won't want to eat there. his number one reason will be because he and i snuck off to lunch there in between store hopping this weekend, sans baby bliss. if she finds out, her bottom lip will hang to the floor until this time next week.

*** and i spoke too soon. she knows! she didn't pout but she did say, "i can't believe y'all ate lunch out without me!" and gave me the evil eye. LOL***

so any way, hopefully we'll go back to the gym tonight.

    364: sweatin' as an oldie

to quote adele givens in Beauty Shop "it's hotter than a jalepeno's coochie out there"!

i just got back in from giving my neighbor a ride to sam's.

the car was parked right in front of our building, we hopped in and had the air going full blast, hopped out at sam's and swooshed our way into the air conditioned building to shop, burst out the doors and right back into the car.

now tell me why my clothes were soaking wet when i got in my door?

sweating is good i know, to release toxins and what not. but i still don't like it. partly because it makes me use extra water (for showering and drinking).

but i guess it has its place in a good weight reduction program. not that i'm officially on one but a sista is trying to lose a few inches before we go to Disney.

hmmm... maybe i'll do another apple fast or two before we haul it outta here.

    .

    903.

Happy Friday everyone. I hope you are all healthy and safe. As I said in my previous post, there have been a number of changes chez Bliss. ...
